Ask what the employer means by its CCBHC model
Ask whether the organization is certified or participates in a state demonstration, which service line is hiring, and how the proposed role fits the current program plan. Clarify which services are delivered directly and which involve outside partners. If the organization has several locations, ask whether the role serves one site or moves across the network.
SAMHSA’s certification criteria cover areas including staffing, access, care coordination, and services. Those criteria describe program-level expectations. They do not tell you your personal schedule or exact duties, so ask the employer to explain how the local model translates into the position you are considering.
Map the team around your position
Ask who you would work with directly: prescribers, psychiatric nurses, therapists, counselors, care coordinators, peer staff, crisis teams, and community partners as relevant to the role. Find out who owns initial contact, ongoing care, referrals, follow-up, and transitions to another service. Confirm which tasks belong to your discipline.
If you would coordinate with several teams, ask how information moves and how colleagues reach one another. Find out who provides clinical leadership and how an urgent concern is escalated. A specific workflow answer will help you picture the job far better than a list of disciplines on a program website.
Distinguish service coverage from your schedule
CCBHC criteria address program access and crisis service availability, but that does not mean every clinician works around the clock. Ask whether your position includes on-call, evening, weekend, crisis, or rotating coverage. Confirm how those responsibilities are staffed and how they fit with your regular caseload and schedule.
If a separate crisis service handles some responsibilities, ask how referrals and handoffs work. If your team shares coverage, request the schedule and explain how time off is arranged. Get the answer from the employer rather than inferring an individual job requirement from a general program standard.
Clarify workload, documentation, and support
Ask what a typical week looks like, how direct service and documentation are balanced, what productivity measures apply, and how the employer handles changes in demand. Find out what orientation and consultation are available, who can answer questions, and what support is planned when staffing changes.
If the role requires a specific license, certification, or experience, ask for the exact requirement and who verifies it. State requirements and local implementation can matter. Confirm the position’s expectations with the credentialing contact and clinical leader, especially if responsibilities cross service lines.
Before you accept, ask how the position connects to the program’s current service plan and how changes reach staff. Find out who communicates a change in coverage or duties, how much notice to expect, and whom to contact when the day-to-day role no longer matches the description. This also gives you a sense of how the organization communicates with its clinicians.
Check the role against your own goals
Compare the opportunity with the patient work you want, the team structure you prefer, the schedule you need, and the support you expect. Ask what details are finalized and which are still developing. If the role’s scope shifts during the interview process, request an updated description before you make a decision.
Review location, compensation framework, benefits, training, and transition timing alongside the care model. A CCBHC label does not make every position alike. CTG can help you explore a specific permanent opening and work through the questions that matter to you before deciding whether to continue.
